Background of the Study
Pain management is a fundamental aspect of pediatric care, and it encompasses a variety of strategies, including both traditional and modern approaches. In many developing regions like Taraba State, pediatric nurses often combine conventional medical practices with traditional methods, which may include herbal remedies, massage, and other culturally relevant techniques (Sani et al., 2024). Modern pain management, on the other hand, involves the use of pharmacological agents such as analgesics, opioids, and anesthetics, alongside non-pharmacological methods such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and physical therapy.
While modern pain management techniques have been proven effective in clinical settings, traditional methods continue to be widely practiced, especially in rural or underserved areas where access to healthcare resources may be limited. The use of traditional pain management techniques raises questions about their safety, efficacy, and integration with modern medical practices (Oluwaseun et al., 2023). Understanding the balance between traditional and modern approaches used by pediatric nurses is crucial for improving pain management in children, ensuring that both effective medical and culturally acceptable methods are utilized.
In Taraba State, where there are significant cultural and regional differences, it is important to assess the extent to which pediatric nurses employ traditional methods in comparison to modern techniques. This study will explore how pediatric nurses in the state incorporate both approaches and evaluate the effectiveness of these methods in managing pediatric pain.
Statement of the Problem
The use of traditional and modern pain management techniques by pediatric nurses in Taraba State has not been thoroughly studied, yet it is likely that different approaches may have varying degrees of effectiveness, depending on the clinical setting and the cultural preferences of patients and families. The challenge is to ensure that pain management strategies are both effective and culturally appropriate. Limited research has been conducted in Taraba State to compare these techniques, and there is a lack of understanding of how pediatric nurses in this region balance the use of traditional and modern approaches in pain management.
